For Cinco De Mayo 2021, FSQ show host Chuck Da Fonk focuses in on two of his favourite Mexican musical genres – Cumbia and Banda – and then discovers these two distinct genres intersect at the funky rhythmic orchestrated sub-genre known as “Cumbia con Banda”
Mexico City family musical group Los Ángeles Azules are the premiere example of a Banda delivering Cumbia productions. Chuck traces Azules’ early 1990s evolution from Cumbia con Banda to Cumbia sinfónica (fully Orchestrated Cumbia) to today’s pop fuelled Cumbia Sonidera. La Décima Banda and Banda Torera Del Valle, both hailing from the Mexican state of Sinaloa, deliver a deeply localized version of the genre.
Don’t like Cumbia con Banda? There’s so much new music here beyond those genres, including ultra sleek modern JAMS by Hadiya George x Godmode Music, Feiertag, Kartell featuring SG Lewis, Los Wálters, Kali Uchis, Tra’zae Clinton and Mykki Blanco.
