This week, Chuck Da Fonk presents his DJ mix for Dug Up The Bongo, recorded in 2020 and never before aired.
It’s a musical Trans-Atlantic journey, starting in New York City, the birthplace of original disco and funk music. Then the mix turns south to the Caribbean sea, covering Reggae, Calypso, and Soca from island countries like Barbados, Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia, and Jamaica.
It turns towards South America, and we bring you the unique combination of east-west styles found in Guyanese chutney music and spin some more familiar beats through Brazilian samba. Then it’s time stopover in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, to hear the unique modern zouk styles of the island nation of Cabo Verde.
To make the rest of this sonic Oceanic voyage complete, we reach the African continent in Senegal to pick up on some Francophone African reggae, before turning north. We hit the Canary Islands and Spain for doses of Canaria folk music, merengue, and Balearica. We complete the round trip around all points of the Atlantic ocean with Afro-pop straight out of London and other rhythmic new wave opuses from the UK.
