James Brown’s back catalogue is extensive to say the least. Jam packed with timeless and classic ‘Big’ hits alongside plenty of wonderful but lesser known curios, diving through it you can’t help but marvel at the sheer volume of great recordings this man produced. This little nugget is from his under-publicized period when he sat down at the Hammond B3 and recorded a series of primarily organ driven LP’s and 45’s for the Mercury Records subsidiary Smash. It’s a FABulous little instrumental version, perhaps not as slick and refined in the arrangement department as the Jimmy Smith’s, but a real bonafide Funky-Soul-Groover with a big heart that show cases one of the many talents of the legendary Soul Brother Number One.
