I have seen Martha Reeves describe this as one of her favourite songs. Released in 1966 on Motown’s Gordy imprint and apparently originally earmarked for Kim Weston, the actual song recording features Martha backed by Motown session group The Andantes, stable mates The Four Tops, with the ever reliable Funk Brothers providing instrumentation. It is a truly exquisite record, a sparkling piece of Motown Magic that floats, glides and soars into an almost classical sphere in parts, enchanting you to take an emotive journey. It is also a beautiful show case for Martha’s vocals, which are perhaps more defined, sculptured, and personal than on her earlier more popish Motown hits.
