The Soul Jazz Session

Jazz history often suggests that when bebop emerged in the mid-’40s, the genre shifted away from being a danceable, groove-centric experience. However, starting in the ’50s and thriving throughout the ’60s, soul jazz offered a fresh reason for people to dance and enjoy themselves in neighbourhood bars.

Though soul jazz’s goals were modest, its impact was significant: without it, genres like hip-hop, neo-soul, acid jazz, turntablism, smooth jazz, quiet storm, and much of today’s urban-infused modern jazz wouldn’t exist.
