On a hot balmy evening in July at what can only be described accurately as a classic London ‘boozer’ Durand Jones and The Indications enter the stage to a packed-out Lexington audience. Durand greets the audience by asking “Hey London how y’all doing” raises a glass in appreciation and then launches into ‘Smile’ taken from their eponymous début LP.
The venue is a perfect space for this intimate gig with those in attendance ranging from the young to the more mature soul lovers. Durand’s vocals are simply stunning in the live arena and the Indications performance is tight and the sound crisp.
As the gig gathered pace Durand handed over vocal duties on ‘Is It Any Wonder’ to Brooklyn based drummer Aaron Frazer. Aaron’s perfect falsetto voice added yet another dimension to the evening. The level of performance continued on an upward trajectory taking the crowd along with it as the gig progressed. The audience participation into ‘Groovy Babe’ encouraged by Durand ensured the gig was on course to erupt. This was the outcome as ‘Can’t Keep My Cool’ was rolled out. The rocket launched and passion of the crowd could no longer be contained for this outstanding gig.
Reflecting upon tonight’s experience at The Lexington it won’t be long until Durand Jones & The Indications brand of heartfelt soul will be dining at the top table of today’s soul scene.
