The versatile voice of Brighton—born crooner James Hunter drips with authenticity. He’ll throw his voice, hit high notes, wail and purr, all the while ripping it up on guitar. After more than 30 years singing for the likes of Van Morrison, Hunter has spent the past 10 touring the world with his retro rhythm and blues group The James Hunter Six.
The New Yorker has described James Hunter’s “tight, taut compositions” as “rooted in American soul music without being bound to it,” evoking feelings of nostalgia without pandering. Hunter and company just released their second album on Daptone Records, Whatever It Takes, a beautifully produced, heartfelt collection of original tunes. “I Don’t Wanna Be Without You,” the album’s first single, is a touching tribute to love found and not easily forgotten.
Hunter was nominated for a best traditional blues album Grammy for his debut album, People Gonna Talk, and shows no signs of slowing down. Catch him at City Winery in NYC on Feb. 21 and prepare for some slick soul.
